TED (Technology, Entertainment, Design) is a non-profit organization devoted to “ideas worth spreading” – “ideas worth spreading”. Started as a four-day conference in California 25 years ago, TED has grown in its mission through multiple initiatives.
In the annual TED Conference, the major protagonists of “thinking” and “doing” are invited to tell their ideas in presentations of no more than 18 minutes. Their speeches are made available, free of charge, on the ted.com website.
Our mission: to spread ideas.
We strongly believe in the power of ideas to change attitudes, life and ultimately the world. So we’re building here a clearinghouse that offers the free knowledge and inspiration offered by the world’s most inspired thinkers, and also a community of souls curious to confront ideas and others. Do you have an idea? We want to hear it!
The TED Spring Conference, held annually in Long Beach and simultaneously in Palm Springs, is at the heart of TED. More than a thousand people now attend – indeed, the event is totally sold out a year in advance – and the content has expanded to include the science, business, arts, and global issues that await answers for our world.
For four days 50 speakers each take a 15-minute time, but there are also many shorter presentations, including music, performances and comedy. Everyone shares the same experience. It shouldn’t work, but it works.
It works because all knowledge is connected. Every now and then it makes sense to get out of the trench you dig to live, and climb to 10,000 meters above sea level, where we see, to our amazement, an intricate and interconnected whole.
X = event organized independently
In the spirit of “ideas that deserve to be disseminated” TED has launched a program, called TEDx, of independently organized local events that aim to bring people together to share an experience similar to that experienced with TEDs.
At all TEDx events, live presentations, performances and video screenings from TEDTalks are combined to stimulate relationships and discussions within small groups. TED Conferences provide the general guiding model for TEDx events, but local TEDx are built independently.
